Format

• Teams are comprised of six individuals on the floor - at least two must be female
• Leagues will be segmented into separate skill divisions whenever possible
• Matches last 40 minutes - the team winning the most games takes the match
• MSSC supplies balls, referees, and team t-shirts
• Six game regular season, followed by the playoffs

Registration and League Capacity

• Leagues typically have a capacity of nine teams and sometimes sell out in advance of any posted registration deadlines. Some leagues may be capped at seven teams depending on how much time we have available. Don't wait until the last minute to register if you want to play.
• We won't run a dodgeball league with fewer than six teams, so please select an alternate day of the week during registration in the event we need to cancel the night you registered for. The Dodgeball movie hit theaters in 2004, and the sport isn't as popular as it once was.
• Registration deadline: Generally ten days prior to the start date (if not already sold out). The deadline may be moved up if league start dates are spread out and we need to adjust deadlines for shirt ordering purposes

Divisions and Skill Level

There is no guarantee we will be able to segment any given league into separate divisions, and all teams may end up in the same division. Teams self-select their skill level, subject to MSSC approval. Be honest about your skill level, as teams of very low skill level do not enjoy getting blown out by highly skilled teams, and it makes the league look bad for allowing that type of skill disparity to occur.

Teams should always overstate their skill level rather than understate it. Example: If you think your team may be somewhere between a 5 and a 7, enter 7 and see how the season goes. It's much more palatable to have an average team end up with a sub-.500 record in a higher skill division vs. a more skilled team destroying all the other teams in a lower skill division.

Individual Sign Up Information

• Please read our Free Agents page for tips and expectations when registering as an Individual
• The need for Individuals (or "free agents") varies from season to season. Some years we place a lot of them; some years we don't. You aren't charged unless we place you on a team, so there's no harm in signing up
• Men: We typically are not able to place many males who register as Individuals because most teams are not looking for additional males. You could end up on a "free agent" team though
• Ladies: If you want to be placed on a team, it's best to sign up on your own and NOT request to be placed with a male, as there is a much smaller chance a team will pick you up if you want to play with a guy.

Dates and Locations

Fall leagues begin the last week in October. Winter leagues normally begin at various times in January.

• Winter 2026 locations: Tuesdays and Thursdays are at Randall Elementary. Wednesdays are at Emerson Elementary
• Locations for any given league are not set in stone. They're subject to change at any time based on the whims of the Madison school district. We often have leagues that end up changing facilities for one reason or another, and players should be prepared to play wherever the league is located

Scheduling

• Since it's asked all the time: Schedules are usually posted 4-6 days before a league begins. If you signed up for Tuesday nights, your team plays on Tuesday nights, and you should be available for any time slot
• We don't play the day before Thanksgiving or on Thanksgiving. Leagues also don't play for two weeks around the Christmas and New Year's Holidays when schools are closed

Prizes and Other Benefits

These can change from season to season and will be communicated to all teams via email. Prizes are generally awarded in the following order:

1. Gift cards will awarded if the league has a sponsor bar
2. A credit to an upcoming season will be applied for leagues that don't have sponsor bars
3. MSSC “gift cards” will be issued if it's the last indoor league for the season and the captain doesn't want to apply the credit to a different upcoming sport or league. They will also be issued if the team is not playing the upcoming season. The gift card is stored in the captain's Player Profile, is valid for any league, and doesn't expire
