Leagues offered five days per week

MSSC runs Spring, Summer, and Fall leagues each year. The Spring season starts in April and usually runs through mid-July. Summer season usually starts in mid-July and goes through late August or early September. Fall season usually starts in August or September. These timeframes are subject to change depending on the weather. The Summer and Fall seasons don't start until the previous season has been completed. You can register a full team or sign up as an Individual (or "free agent") and MSSC will place you on a team if we have any looking for additional players or we're able to form a free agent team. The recommended roster size is 15 players.

Basic Info

Some league information appears on this page. More is found in our Frequently Asked Questions and the rulebook linked in the grey menu bar toward the top of the page. General club policies can be found at the bottom of this page in the Info & Help section.

Format

  • Teams consist of ten players on the field. All leagues are co-ed, at least four fielders must be female, and a female must hit at least every third at-bat
  • Team shirts, balls, and umpires are provided by MSSC. Players provide their own bats, gloves, and any protective equipment they wish to wear. No bats on USA Softball's banned bat list will be permitted (a recent list appears at the end of the rulebook linked on this page)
  • Games are slow pitch and last seven innings or one hour - whichever comes first
  • Seasons are six regular season games plus single-elimination playoffs. All teams make the playoffs most seasons
  • Please read the rulebooks linked in the grey bar toward the top of the page for full details on formats and rules

League Capacity

Leagues typically have a capacity that varies depending on how many fields we're able to get. Don't wait until the last minute to register if you want to play.

Skill Level and Divisions

Captains will be asked to rate their team's skill level on a scale of 1-10 during registration. We'll form appropriate divisions based on the skill level of registered teams if we can. We reserve the right to change a captain's ranking of their team if they've played before and we feel the rating isn't accurate.

Teams should always overstate their skill level rather than understate it. Example: If you think your team may be somewhere between a 5 and a 7, enter 7 and see how the season goes. It's much more palatable to have an average team end up with a sub-.500 record in a higher skill division vs. a more skilled team destroying all the other teams in a lower skill division.

Which nights are the most (or least) competitive?

This could vary greatly from season to season, but for Summer 2025, the leagues are ranked from most to least competitive roughly as follows:

1. Friday

2. Tuesday

3. Wednesday

4. Thursday

5. Monday

This doesn't mean a lower skilled team can't sign up for Fridays, because we do form separate divisions as much as possible. We do encourage higher level teams to gravitate toward the nights at the top of the list though. We are most likely to be able to form three skill divisions on Thursdays and Tuesdays (respectively), so lower skill teams may want to gravitate toward those nights.

Individual registration details: Individuals may sign up and we will place you if we can. No payment is required at sign up. We will contact you if we have a spot for you and place you when payment is received.

  • Please read our Free Agents page for tips and expectations when registering as an Individual
  • Men: We typically are not able to place many males who register as Individuals in the co-ed league because most teams are not looking for additional males.
  • Ladies: If you want to be placed on a team, it's best to sign up on your own and NOT request to be placed with a male, as there is a much smaller chance a team will pick you up if you want to play with a guy.

Dates and Locations

  • Fall 2025 leagues are all held at Bowman Park on Fish Hatchery Road
  • Locations for any given league are not set in stone. They're subject to change at any time based on the whims of Madison Parks. We often have leagues that end up changing facilities for one reason or another, and players should be prepared to play wherever the league is located

Scheduling

  • Since it's asked all the time: Schedules are posted a few days after registration closes. If you signed up for Tuesday nights, your team plays on Tuesdays nights, and you should be available for any time slot
  • We don't play on Federal holidays like Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. Scheduling on and around holiday weekends varies (particularly for the Friday league). The Friday league does play the Friday before Memorial Day and Labor Day, although you can request it off if you won't be able to field a team. Please see our scheduling page for more details

Prizes and Other Benefits

These can change from season to season and will be communicated to all teams via email. Prizes are generally awarded in the following order:

  1. Gift cards will awarded if the league has a sponsor bar
  2. A credit to an upcoming season will be applied for leagues that don't have sponsor bars
  3. MSSC “gift cards” will be issued if it's the last league for the year and the captain doesn't want to apply the credit to a different upcoming sport or league. They will also be issued if the team is not playing the upcoming season. The gift card is stored in the captain's Player Profile, is valid for any league, and doesn't expire
