Individuals or "Free Agents"

This page contains information for both individuals without a team who are looking to sign up as well as info for captains who just need a couple more players for their team.

Individuals

We accept individual registrations for every sport we run. Our ability to place Individuals varies greatly from season to season and sport to sport. Some seasons we may not place any, and some seasons we may have multiple free agent teams. Tips for getting placed as an individual:

  • Sign up early. We place individuals in the order they register - unless teams are looking for someone specific
  • Many teams ARE looking for someone specific, so fill out the field during registration that asks you to input playing experience, primary position, etc. Be honest and thorough. It's just as important to note if you're a beginner and don't have playing experience so we can place you on an appropriate team
  • Make sure your payment method used to register is valid. If your card expires between the time you registered and the time registration closes, we recommend registering again with the new card and contacting us to cancel the first registration. There's no way to update the card info stored in the system
  • Small groups have become harder to place over the years. Most teams don't need 4-5 players. You'd be better off splitting into pairs or a group of three. An even better option would be to find 4-5 more people and register a team. There are various Facebook groups you can post in to recruit more players, and we can probably add a few free agents to your larger group if needed
  • Don't lie about anything when signing up. Don't rate yourself as only “average” if you played collegiate sports (unless it was 30 years ago). Don't say you can play any position if you can't. Teams won't be happy if you lie and won't invite you back. We've even had people lie about their gender. If we find out you lied, you'll be put on our Sh*t List and won't be placed again (Yes, we really do have one)
  • For those who do end up on a Free Agent team: We recommend you do everything you can to keep the team together, because it might not happen again. It's in your best interest to have someone on the team step up as captain and register your group as a team moving forward. You might lose a few people from season to season, but we can likely fill those spots with some other free agents

Captains

We offer free agents as a courtesy and not an expectation. We may not always have what you need, and you shouldn't need more than a couple free agents to complete your team. A few tips on picking up free agents as a captain:

  • Female free agents are generally limited in every sport other than volleyball. It's in your best interest to find as many of your own females as you can
  • Most people sign up because they want to play. Don't request free agents if you already have a large roster and are going to have multiple people sitting out at any given time during a game or match
  • We assign free agents (particularly females) based on need. If you already have seven females on your kickball roster and another team has four, we're going to give the free agents to the team with four
  • Do everything you can to make the free agents feel welcome and comfortable. They're unlikely to return if they aren't treated well and don't feel like part of the team
  • Teams who abuse the free agent system and/or display poor sportsmanship over the course of a season may find themselves blacklisted from receiving free agents in the future. An example of abusing the free agent system would be hoarding female free agents in a league where they are in high demand. We also want all our players to have a great experience in our leagues, but the experience of free agents in particular is important since they may be new to town and/or not have other avenues to participating on a team. We don't want them on teams who may create a hostile environment that discourages them from signing up for our leagues again
